ESTABLISHED IN 1991, THE COMPANY’S PRIMARY FOCUS WAS TO CATER THE FOUNDERS’ WOOD LOGGING BUSINESS IN SUMATERA. AT THAT TIME, WOOD LOGS WERE REQUIRED TO BE TIMELY DELIVERED IN ORDER TO PRESERVE ITS QUALITY. HOWEVER, THE AVAILABLE RIVER LOGISTIC SERVICES PROVED TO BE UNRELIABLE. AS A RESULT, HABCO WAS BORN WITH ITS FIRST SET OF WOODEN TUG AND BARGE TO OVERCOME THE PROBLEM.Throughout the years, Habco has grown increasingly proficient in navigating through Sumatra’s narrow and winding rivers, which are known for their rapidly shifting water levels. In the steps toward expansion, Habco started inter-island voyages that include shipments to Java, Kalimantan, Sulawesi, and Papua.Following Habco’s growing reputation as a shipping specialist for small barge operations in remote upstream areas, it was approached by a coal company to be the pioneer in providing barge access to Muara Teweh, Since then, Habco continuously expanded its fleet with barges ranging from 180 feet to 330 feet. As of 2016, Habco owns and operates 55 tug and barge sets.Despite growth in both large and small shipping services, small barge operations (180-250 feet) have remained as Habco’s key service that supports the company’s vision to connect remote areas throughout Indonesian archipelago. The larger barges in the fleet signals Habco’s first push to provide a complete marine logistic solution to its clients.
