PT. Dian Rakyat traces its origins to 1933 when Sutan Takdir Alisjahbana, Indonesia's “Grand Old Man of Letter”, established a company to publish “Poedjangga Baroe”, the nation's first Indonesian language literary magazine. At the time Poedjangga Baroe provided one of the main vehicles for the transition from a literature of four chronicles, myths and legends to Indonesia's present day modern literary tradition. The 1930s were an exciting time in the development of Indonesian literature and many of the nations foremost young writers published their first works with us.When Indonesian replaced Dutch as the official language during the forties, the company published the nation's first comprehensive terminology reference and the first Indonesian grammar books. The “Tatabahasa I & II” are at present in their 45th printing edition and still in use in the Indonesia public school system.
