Would not recommend to work in this PI lab
The good thingsAcceptable salary and good number of annual leaves. Peers are generally good-natured and chill
The challengesI work in Department of Microbiology and Immunology and has been there nearly in (and turning soon) 3 months. Although I have to firstly admit my work competency wasn’t there, however the PI that I work with, is particularly emotionally unstable, making you question about this person sanity and desperate to get out. Working with this PI is like walking on thin ice.

It was a good learning experience.
The good thingsI did sign up for an unpaid internship so I can't say anything about the sallary. Otherwise, the people are great and are easy to work with. They were extremely supportive of me and gave me the encouragement I needed. I only work with a limited number of people though, so it's not necessarily generalisable to the entire company.
The challengesThe work itself was challenging since I had to socialise a lot. I was a shy introvert so that's why. However, because of that, I really had to improve myself and I did. I built my confidence there and learnt how to adapt, so things became better overtime. No challenges came from the NUS side.

Lecturers are not valued in NUS-ISS
The good thingsnot much I can think of
The challengesThe senior management (CEO and etc.) at NUS-ISS exhibits old-school micro-management tendencies, as they seem inclined to monitor employees closely . Such practices are unexpected and concerning within an institution within NUS. There is an expectation for all the employees (lecturers included) to complete their work solely at their designated workstations in NUS-ISS (WFH is not an option). Moreover, their lack of visionary leadership has contributed to significant employee turnover rates across all teams over the years. It is surprising and disappointing that NUS OHR has not taken effective measures to address the persistently high churn rate in NUS ISS. Lecturers are not respected and valued here.

Poor leadership and lack of management
The good thingsLeverage on good reputation of NUS to survive. New office building.
The challengesLeavers not promptly replaced but let those staying behind to carry the load. Lack empowerment, every thing must go up to CEO. Pay lip service to staff training, always ask for plans on paper but mangement never execute and support. Too many old timer staff just stay and passing time. Poor HR practices!.

Not a very good career choice unless you are seeking for NUS Masters/PhD
The good thingsLots of freedom to explore different research tangents, ability to use free time to initiate own projects and to seek assistance and guidance from professors and to pursue start-up ideas.
The challengesBetter organisation and renumeration, since research staff typically have trouble clearing their vacation leaves due to challenging demands and deadlines. Typically the professors do not have time to seek career-growing opportunities for their own staff - they have got to do it themselves.
